There are many different issues that one should be concerned with when it comes to women’s health and women and mental health is one of the most important of all. Mental illnesses affect women and men very differently, and in fact most people are not aware but they affect women much more commonly than they do men.

This is understandable, after all women have more hormones and their hormones fluctuate a great deal more as well. Women also go through many more life changes, such as childbirth and menopause, where their hormones fluctuate even more and as a result often results in mental health conditions such as post-partum depression, for instance.

Whether you are a woman or not, it is important that you are aware of the issue of women and mental health and this is especially important because scientists are only now beginning to tease apart the contributions of various biological and psychological factors to mental health and mental illness in both women and men.

Types of Women and Mental Health Disorders

There are numerous different women and mental health disorders that a woman may develop, but a few in particular which are most common. This includes anxiety disorders such as OCD, panic disorder, social phobia and generalized anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, depression, and eating disorders.

Depression is an especially troublesome issue when it comes to women and mental health. Women can develop depression for many reasons and one of the biggest problems is that they often do not even realize that they are depressed until someone in their life starts to tell them that something is wrong.

They may just feel extra antsy, upset, be crying more often than normal, or get angry more easily, and these are all possible signs of a condition of depression.
