When you have visitors from abroad make sure they have adequate visitor health insurance. Sicknesses and injuries can happen anytime to anyone. To be protected during travel and transit, the coverage period can include the days spent in the air at the start and end of the journey.
Upon purchaes of the plan double check the insurance ID cards and insurance certificate are correct. For immediate coverage confirmation you can request the ID cards be emailed to you. The cards must be in the possession of the insured at all times.
It is common to have insurance companies require you to only use providers within a network. Using these providers will keep your out of pocket costs to the minimum. Decide who you will be using after you purchase the plan so you will not be in a panic when have to seek treatment later.
Make a note of the number to call to verify benefits. Contact the insurance company to confirm coverage and to follow the procedures in case you need to get medical service. If surgery is recommended or the treatment involves hospitalization, precertification may be necessary.
911 services can be used in life threatening situations. Doctor office visits are recommended for non life threatening situations. Urgent Care centers can be used if an appointment is not available or the doctor's office is closed. Use your judgment before you go to the ER. Visits for reasons that are not of an emergency nature may not be covered by the insurance.
The medical provider determines whether to bill the insurance company directly or bill the insured. If the insured has made a payment then the insured can fill out a claim form, include itemized receipts and seek reimbursement for the payments made. The insurance company may request additional information and the entire reimbursement process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
