Oriental rug cleaning and care is a simple process of following a few steps to keep it lasting for years. Don't take your beloved rug and let it age due to a few common factors.
Oriental rug care is something that you should consider early on in the life of the rug. If you are careful early on, the rug will look nice and only need a little care. If you let things slip and don't care for your rug, you will have to pay the price of repairs, professional cleaning, and permanent stains. Keeping a rug looking natural and beautiful is like maintaining a classic car. There small yet important things that you need to do periodically for your oriental rug.
Oriental Rug Cleaning and Care - The Process
Sun damage is often time and overlooked danger to your rug. Just like other furnishings, sun damage gradually fades the color of a rug. There are two options to deal with sun damage. First is to prevent it all together. Keep shades closed or don't place it in really sunny areas. Another option, especially if you already have a partially faded rug, is to rotate it every once in awhile to balance out any fading of the colors.
Uneven wear is another danger to your oriental rug. Uneven wear happens when one part of the rug is walked more than another part of the rug. This happens in high trafficked areas of a room. Just like the sun care, flip the rug around from time to time. Also consider using a pad underneath the rug to hold it in place so that the walking on the rug won't cause it to slip up as much.
An obvious but important cleaning tip is vacuuming. If you want to keep your oriental rug clean, this is one of the easiest and almost most important steps. Vacuum the rug on both the top of the rug and the bottom of the rug. Much of the dirt falls to the bottom of the rug and many people don't think about vacuuming up that part of the rug which is important. Remember this also helps keep the weaving on the rug straight which extends the life of the rug.
Although vacuuming helps your rug, if you do it wrong, you will end up ruining it. Vacuum with a hose extention if you have one since it's easier on the rug and nothing will get caught in the vacuum brushes This happens to fringe on the ends of rugs all the time causing a lot of issues.
Using a rug pad can also extend the life of a rug. It might not be considered an absolute necessity but will help greatly. A pad can extend the life of the rug and once it is in place it does not really take any extra maintenance.
