Understanding the Effects of Clinical Depression
Mark Hall
Depression is one of the most crippling, but misunderstood disorders ever encountered; to make matters worse it is now recognized that there is more than one type of this illness. The cause is often (but not always) about issues that have not been rectified; all of us occasionally become depressed over certain events. Initially, it is important you recognize you have issues, and to get professional medical guidance to help you; it is also important to discover just what has caused the problem in the fist place.
Feeling low and angry at life affects all of us occasionally in particular when something awful has happened; it is unlikely however, a doctor would diagnose depression if they did feel this way as it is generally a temporary experience. Probably the most likely cause is stress, often owing to family or other relationship problems which for one reason or another cannot be readily solved; as far as a person who is depressed is concerned: their problems have gone a stage further and need to be dealt with differently. In many incidences like this, a person believes that if they ignore the problem it will just resolve itself but this rarely happens; a person end up feeling more helpless than they did before, and it becomes a vicious circle that must be broken.
Often the problem stems from a situation in the workplace which is unresolved or ongoing. It is not uncommon for this condition to result in panic attacks, so outside help is often needed to end the situation. This type of situation can make carrying out normal work duties difficult and will often result in the person taking long term sickness leave; at which point a specialist counselor should be called in to resolve whatever conflict or issues. It is also possible that certain medications can cause chemical imbalances that create a feeling of depression. This is a problem for the person on medication especially where no external situation exists that could actually have caused the condition.
There is a great deal of responsibility here on the person's doctor to keep a regular check on a patient who has been given medication where these symptoms can occur. One of the biggest problems is where the symptoms of depression do not seem to have any cause that can be discovered; a situation like this can make treating the condition much more complicated. The difficulty is getting to person to admit to the problem in the first instance; when this happens the person cannot associate the condition with the cause.
Although around for a long time, it is well known that manic depression or bipolar as it is also known can be hard to diagnose; it take many years to diagnose owing to the type of symptoms displayed and the other various types whose category the person may also fall into. When a person is unable to deal with their own issues, this condition will usually follow and at that point, provided they can admit they have a problem, something can normally be done. Just making that first move can make all the difference and enable the patient to feel as if they are making appositive move towards their treatment; starting medical treatment as early as possible will enable you to make those first steps to being free of its grip.
