Theme Parties Are Great

By: Alex Richardson

Theme Parties

When I was a kid, I used to absolutely love theme parties. My parents always were big fans of birthday party themes, and every year they would hold a different theme party for me. The first one I remember was a Wild West themed party For my ninth birthday. Back then, of course, I was into cowboys and Indians as most kids my age were. Often the party was pretty simple for my parents, but at the time I was very impressed. I am still touched by how much attention they would put into the details. Everything was perfect from the old West style squirt guns to the cowboy birthday cake.

What I didn’t really realize until recently is that adults can hold theme parties as well. Party themes are usually done in an understated way, but you can have a lot of fun with it and take it as far as you want to. Hawaiian theme parties, for example, are quite popular for weddings. Since a lot of people go to the tropical paradise of their choice for a honeymoon trip, themed parties are a way to bring some of that paradise to the guests in attendance.

Of course, theme parties do not have to be so elaborate. As a matter of fact, a poker night can be thought of as a theme party. If you set up right, your poker night can have an element of fantasy in it. You can light the table with harsh overhead lighting and put on mafia style music if you want to make everything look bootleg and underground. Alternately, you can bring in some subtle wild West accents and even serve Mexican food to bring in a southwestern flavor. You can to control every aspect of decoration, so there are plenty of options for you to really express yourself. It doesn’t have to be over, but you can still create the right mood for your party.

In my opinion, the best theme parties are still the ones that I hold for my kids. Nowadays, party themes are a little bit different. When I was a kid, the cartoons were mostly American, So we did not have anime themed parties. Still, a cartoon party is about the same as it ever was. I can appreciate my child’s taste in birthday parties even if I don’t know the cartoons that he watches very well. The way I see it, the more things change the more they stay the same.
