Start A Non Profit Organization

   By: Jean Houston

Don't let the name fool you ? starting a nonprofit Organization is a great way to make money. After all, when you decide to start a nonprofit, you get tax exempt status. In addition, all of the contributions that other people give you are tax exempt. This means that, between the tax break people get and the good feelings that contributing to a nonprofit gives them, you will get tons of donations. If you start a non profit ? which is easy to do in most states ? you can make the world a better place while making plenty of money.

Of course, deciding to start a non profit organization is not as easy as all that. First of all, you have to figure out what your nonprofit organization will do. Will you start a non profit that will give job training to the poor? Is your organization going to help out children waiting for adoption? Deciding to start a non profit can be a little bit tricky, because there are already so many nonprofits out there. Between human rights organizations, religious organizations, job training organizations, and advocacy groups, it can be a pretty competitive field. Nonetheless, it is possible to find a niche and start a non profit that fills a hole left by other nonprofit organizations.

More and more, people are deciding to start non profits to address local environmental concerns. You would not believe how many of these nonprofits succeed, or even prosper. If you start a non profit, for example, designed to advocate for local watershed issues, you can make a big difference in your local community. More and more these days, people are concerned about community issues more than national or international events. If you are connected in your community and help to fulfill its needs, your decision to start a non profit will be a rewarding one, both personally and financially.

Of course, in order to start a non profit, you need two things. You need to be educated about the issues, and you need to be involved in your community. Especially if you are starting nonprofits to address community issues, you need to be connected to other local activists. Otherwise, people will not want to support your nonprofit group. Nonprofit organizations need to be responsible to the needs of the community. That means that you need to do everything you can to hear from as many community voices as possible. Only then can you start a non profit that will thrive.
