Spoon Rest
I have one thing in my home that didn't cost very much, but still seems to be somewhat of a waste. Though I guess it does make cleaning up a little easier, a mess is still a mess. The spoon rest I have on my stove didn't cost very much, but I often wonder why I even bothered. It does save most of the mess from hitting the stovetop, but in reality, the stovetop is easier to clean than the spoon rest. Perhaps they are still around because they come in decorative colors and themes and not because they are very practical.
My spoon rest is plain white, and has three grooves in it that look like they are meant for a spoon. I use it often enough, but I can't ever seem to get it clean without a lost of hassle. The times when it has been in the dishwasher, I have just laid the spoon down on the stove surface, and I have found that this is very easy to clean. Perhaps back when spoon rests were first invented they did clean easier than the stovetop, but I don't think that is necessarily the case today.
Some people do collect things, and some like to hunt for an unusual spoon rest. You can find old ones in antique stores if this is something you are looking for, though remember that today's antique stores tend to have retro items (or vintage) along with true antiques. The spoon rest has been around for a while, though they may not look like you would expect them to look. If you don't know what you are looking for, you might want to look them up online or ask for help when you are in a store looking for them.
I don't know if I will keep my spoon rest, though I can't imagine my husband will want me to throw it out. He uses it all the time, though honestly he is not the one that has to clean it. He thinks he is doing me a favor by using the spoon rest, and perhaps that is just as well. Its nice to know that he thinks of me, even if it is something as simple as that. Cleaning the house is hard enough in my busy life, and if he thinks that helps, then I'll just keep letting him think that.
