Social Skills Lessons Are Much Appreciated Through Life

By: Kai LeBerge

As soon as I was halfway through kindergarten, I was a wreck. It was not really my fault. You see, there are two kinds of kindergarten teachers. There are kindergarten teachers who are there because they love little children, and want to make a difference in young lives. These kindergarten teachers are wonderful. Then there are the other kind ? the kind who are there because they are petty tyrants who want to make children miserable. This is the kind of kindergarten teacher that I had.

I wasn’t long before I became the class clown. You see, she would pick on me and bully me. She hated the fact that my handwriting was not neat, and that I couldn’t color inside the lines. Soon, I began to act out. I had few friends. That’s when my parents decided that social skills lessons were in order.

You may think that you have never had a social skills lesson in school, but if you have you might not have noticed. Social skills lessons are very cleverly designed, and they are taught to children at a young age. Anything that teaches kids to share, to be polite, or to work together falls under the rubric of social skills lessons. For me however, these lessons in social skills were not enough. I needed the heavy-duty classes.

My parents took me to the only social skills lessons class that they could find, but this turned out to be a terrible mistake. It was geared towards kids with autism, and I felt very uncomfortable in there. This made me act out even more, and soon I was regularly getting kicked out of my social skills class. That is when one of my teachers took me under her wing.

She could see that the social skills lessons weren’t working for me. You see, it wasn’t my social skills that were problem. It was my self-confidence. I been so shaken up by having such a mean teacher that I had begun to lash out, trying to get attention. Of course, in some ways the social skills lessons could help, but it was much better to get to the root of the problem. My parents immediately took me out of the social skills lessons class and put me in therapy. That did wonders for my self-confidence, and although I have had my share of problems growing up, I ultimately turned in to a pretty happy, confident adult.
