Second Hand Books Are Useable |

It seems that everyone has something that they like to do as a way to pass the time. Some people like working with their hands doing some type of arts or crafts project. Other people like to sew or work with yarn. My husband loves to fish and hunt in his spare time. I like to do many things, but one of my favorite activities is reading. I love to find a quiet comfortable spot to sit down with a good book and escape the world around me for a short time.
Through the years I have spent a great deal of money on books. I have joined book clubs, where you are sent so many books a year. I have bought books at discount stores as well as bookstores. I have also checked books out of the library. Two years ago I started a club to exchange second hand books with my co-workers.
After many years of reading I had accumulated so many books that I no longer had any place to store them. I had exchanged some with friends and had taken a large box full to the food shelf because they had a section for second hand books. One day one of my co-workers asked me if I had a particular book. I told her that I think I did but it could have been in the box I took to the food shelf. She told me that she would like to look through my books before I got rid of them. She stated that she had several second hand books that she could bring to have me look through. We decided that we could start a book exchange in the break room at work. There was a large counter area that people place old magazines on. We asked our supplies person to find us a small book shelf and bookends so we could arrange the second hand books by this counter. We then sent out an email letting others know that they could bring in second hand books and exchange them for others. We encouraged everyone to look through the books and to take what they wanted. When they were done they could bring the book back.
This has turned out to be a great way to recycle my books and also read new books that others have furnished. It is nice not to have to return the book to the library, and I am certainly saving money by reading the second hand books rather than buying them new. It is also nice to be able to discuss books with other people that enjoy reading as much as I do.
