In order to get a position in sales management, you should probably have quite a few years of sales experience under your belt. Those that work in sales are often a bit harder to manage because you are dealing with a lot of type A personalities. If you have worked in sales, you have a better chance of understanding what they are going through, and how to see the strengths and the weakness of those you are about to manage. If you don’t have sales experience, this might not be the job for you.
Salespeople are all very aggressive, and they are very forward. They are often very popular folks in their personal life because they know how to engage others in interesting and stimulating conversation. Any good salesperson knows that they are selling themselves as much as they are selling a product or a service, and they know how to do just that. On the flipside though, they are very aggressive about their jobs, and they may have problems taking direction from someone in sales management who has no idea what they do and how they do it.
Sales management often means putting out fires and redirecting people where they are needed the most. It is much like any other management position, but can be a bit more fiery. Some companies sell just one thing, as with cars, but most have more than one. That might mean watching closely to see where someone might do the best, and then moving them to that position. They may not want to go, and that means sales management can be tricky. However, after further thought, they do want to be where they can make the most, and if they trust you, they will go where they think the money will be.
Sales management jobs are out there, and many of them happen within a company. That means you could be a top seller one day, and then move on to management the next day. There are some that are filled from the outside, but that is usually when they don’t have anyone with enough experience within, or they simply don’t have anyone who wants to go into management. If you are looking for sales management positions, try to find ones within the same industry if you can so that you know what you are doing when you start. Knowing how to sell is one thing, but knowing the particulars of a certain industry is quite another.
