By: Jamie Preston

Roller hockey is a very challenging sport that has great appeal to many young athletes. There are a few different ways to play hockey including on the ice and on foot. What makes roller hockey so interesting is that it requires as much skill and balance as ice hockey but it also has the convenient edge of being played just about anywhere and in any kind of weather.

There are a couple forms of this kind of game that we will briefly explore here. You can make some considerations before delving into roller hockey as a sport. These considerations will help you decide which products are right for your sport playing needs. Once you think things through you are on your way to starting a fun and rewarding new sport.

Quad roller hockey is played on traditional roller skates. These skates have four wheels on them. Quad skates represent the inception of this kind of sport because this was the type of footwear that players wore when this sport was first invented. Some players like to stick to the quad skates for their recreation as well as serious play.

Ice hockey is the fundamental game that has served as the inspiration for quad roller hockey. This game has been enjoyed by people all around the world for many years. Whether on the ice, or on the street, this game has had a profound impact on sports across the globe.

In the spirit of capturing the feeling of gliding on the ice, roller hockey later developed into inline skating. Some players argue that this is as close as you can possibly get to skating on the ice without actually hitting a frozen surface. Inline roller hockey is played on a dry rink just like the traditional quad skate version.

Your choice in skates is completely dependent on which sport you prefer. Do you like the traditional quad game that has been around for many, many years? Are you more interested in the newer inline skates that are similar to ice skates? Either way, there are other items that need to be put on your list.

It doesn’t matter if you play on ice or on a dry rink. You still have to make sure that you have adequate protection. This includes wearing a helmet, knee and elbow pads as well as other protective gear while playing. Getting the right gear is the best way to start having a blast in the roller hockey rink.
