You may not have given much thought to retail display units, but many of them find a second and even third life after they have left that store. Though some are for a specific purpose and are destroyed after they are used, there are some that go on to other things. You may not realize it, but you probably see them in more places than you realize. This is one way to save on displays, and a great way to get some cash back for some businesses.
Most large businesses will buy their retail display units new. Some are special, and come with a new product or are shipped for a special sales promotion. You might not know it, but when these larger stores get new stuff, they often sell what they were using to smaller businesses in the area. This gives them some great looking retail display units to use without having to spend the money to buy them new. Many times these are still in very good shape when they are sold.
There are other types of people who want to get their hands on retail display units. These are usually the very small and home business. My friend sells candles, and other varieties of crafts. She goes around looking for these units because when she sells at craft fairs and other events, she needs to have something to display her goods. She has picked up odds and ends here and there, and now has a complete traveling display that looks really great when she puts it together. She is pretty good at taking somewhat questionable looking and old retail display units and making something great out of them.
The cheapest of these are often thrown away. I had a friend years ago that had shelves that said "Revlon" on them. She told me that she saw them sitting outside the back door of a chain pharmacy and went in to ask if she could have them. She wasn't particularly fond of Revlon by any means, but she was in college, and saw a way to get free shelves for her clothing. They told her she could have them, and she used them for her sweaters and tops for a while. After she could afford more, she tossed them out. You might be able to find something like this too, but make sure you ask first, as they might be spoken for.
