Though there were some self-publishing programs out there, they really didn’t amount to much. Today, you can still find these great self publishing houses, but the reach is far greater than it ever was before. Though sales are not usually able to match the traditional publisher, you can do more than ever before. You might even skip the book part altogether and go for the e-book.
When you have a book you feel good about, you always want to try the big publishing houses first. You can find these by looking in Writer’s Market each year. This book will give you all the information you need to know. You should find the publishing houses that accept the genre of writing you have to submit, and then you should follow the submission guidelines to the letter. You should also make sure you find out if they take multiple submissions or if you have to submit to different places one at a time.
If you don’t have any luck with the big publishing houses, you can try to go to one of the many self publishing sites you can find online. They allow you to upload your material, design your cover and spine, and then they print them when someone orders. They get a cut for their trouble, of course, but if you think you are good at self promotion, you might be able to get some great sales numbers this way. If anything, you can have enough copies printed to have one for yourself, and some go give to anyone you want. You might even be able to sell them locally.
Others opt to skip the traditional printing publishing houses all the way around, and they go for the e-book format. This method is completely electronic. If someone is interested in reading your book, they simple pay a fee and download it. They can read it from their computer or they can print it out if they want to. This might be the most cost effective way to make money, but there tends to be something missing when you go this way. Perhaps it is one of the most exciting parts of the publishing business for any writer. There might be nothing like holding a copy of your own book in your hand.
