Have you ever thought that everything in your life was going great and then you are thrown a curve ball? This recently happened to my husband and I. We had parented our children through high school and the two older ones were in college. Our youngest son was taking time working in a sporting goods shop and deciding what he wanted to do with his life. I was fine with him not going directly into college because school had always been a challenge for him. He was very good at retail sale, and being a sports fanatic, he was working in the ideal store. He was dating a lovely young woman that he met through friends.
One evening he came home and announced that he had decided to go to college. He realized that the job he was presently doing would dead end if he did not have a degree. He was also motivated to get his degree because his new girl friend was getting hers. He decided he wanted to be close to her so he wanted to enroll at Ohio State University. We live in Minnesota. I knew that this was not the furthest distance that he could have picked, but I did not like the idea of my baby being that far from home. Ohio State University is a fine school with a great reputation, but they did not have a reciprocal agreement with Minnesota, so he would have to pay out of state tuition costs. He has been living on his own and earning an income so he applied for financial assistance on his own. He was told that he had to show his parents income because he is under the age of twenty two. With all of our income combined he did not qualify for any grants or scholarships. He was able to get a low rate student loan.
This concerned me a great deal that he would be going into debt, leaving the state and starting at Ohio State University knowing only one person. I was concerned that this would be a grave strain on a new relationship. My husband and I decided that we could not meddle too greatly in his life. We knew he was an adult and needed to make his own decisions. We also knew that he would need to keep his grades up at Ohio State University in order to continue there. We also reasoned that we could arrange to take vacations to go see him.
Our son will be completing his first semester at Ohio State University in a few weeks. He loves the campus and he has matured greatly since he left home. It seems that things are working out well for him. Some times the least expected decisions turn out to be for the best.
