Math Lessons Can Help Many

By: Chris Sussan

Math Lessons

I have often heard that most people have one type of brain. There are some who are very good at writing and being creative, and there are others were gifted in math and science. I don’t know if this is true, but it seems to be a very good theory. There are some people who are good with both, but for the most part, you will find that people have skills in one area or the other, but cannot master both. Perhaps this is why I had so many problems with my math lessons when I was in high school.

When I had math lessons in elementary school I really didn’t have a problem. In fact, I always got very good grades. This changed when I entered high school however, as the math lessons began to get harder and harder. Basic math was never a problem, and I did pretty well with fractions, and all types of business math. When it came to algebra math lessons however, I would often cry as I try to do my homework. No matter what I did, I could never grasp the concepts as well as I wanted to. I would pick up things here and there, but most of the math lessons were just too hard.

I began to think I was stupid. However, all of the testing I had ever taken pointed otherwise. I always scored very well in all of my other courses, it was just the math lessons that seem to give me problems. Each night when I took my math homework home, I would put off doing it for as long as I possibly could. Once I got halfway through my math lessons, it would have to quit because I had a pounding headache. I don’t know what caused the headache, and I learned to associate with math.

I barely passed algebra, and try to tackle algebra II the next year. I don’t know why I thought the math lessons would get easier for me, but I thought I needed to try to take the class. Things did not improve, in fact, they get worse than ever. I do believe I passed my second year of algebra, but it was only by the grace of God that I did so. Because I had such a hard time with math lessons, I decided to take the easier math courses for the rest of my high school career. I knew my future did not involve complicated math, and that was alright with me.
