Martial Arts Equipment Can Help You

By: Kai LeBerge

Martial Arts Equipment

When I first began studying fighting, I completely discounted the value of good martial arts equipment. I believed that martial art supplies were unnecessary. I figure that if you had your fists, a nice gym to work out in, and a good teacher, you could get where you wanted. While that is true, I now know that good martial arts gear will get you there more quickly than poor gear or none at all.

One of the most important parts of martial arts equipment is a good punching bag or body back to work on. No matter what the martial art, you can always strengthen yourself and improve your speed and reflexes by working on kicking and punching. Simply put, the more times you kick or punch a bag, the faster and more powerful you will be.

Sparring is another activity that requires good martial arts equipment. There is no point in playing tough guy. If you’re going to be training in one of the fighting arts, you have to make sure that you are safe. Otherwise, you will be injured and not able train anymore. This is why it is important to have headgear, some kind of boxing gloves, knee and elbow pads, and anything else you might need in your particular art. Some martial arts uniforms are also specifically geared to reduce the impact of kicks and punches.

Althought weights are not technically martial arts equipment, they are useful in training. Doing push-ups, chin-ups, bench presses, curls, and other strengthening activities will greatly increase your agility and ability to fight. It’s not all about technique. Sometimes, just being stronger is enough to win. At any rate, being stronger certainly won’t hurt you. Anything that will help you strengthen up will give you an edge in combat.

Another thing that people forget all about a lot is good martial arts shoes. Shoes are an important part of martial arts equipment. You can’t just simply wear gym shoes and expect them to cut it. They won’t. Kung fu shoes are much lighter and more flexible than typical tennis shoes. This allows you to move with a great deal of agility, something that you need when training to fight. If you have heavy shoes, they will slow you down, cripple your moves, and generally make you a less effective student. Why not give yourself an edge by investing in good gear from the very beginning. You will be glad that you did.
