The Los Angeles Police Have A Difficult Job

By: Sky Hudgins

What is your take on cops? In my experience chatting with many people over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that folks hate police officers. Do you have any idea why this is? Of course you do. It’s quite obvious, isn’t it? The only time you generally encounter them, unless you’re friends with one, is when they pull you over to issue a speeding ticket or traffic violation. Nice, huh? Well, I think police officers get a bad rap. They pass out citations because it’s their job, and chances are you deserved it. Most likely you’re ticked-off because you got caught, riddin dirty. Okay, I couldn’t resist that last part. Pop culture always gets the best of me. Anyway, can you imagine what it would be like to be a Los Angeles police officer? Even for a single day? You’d probably gain a whole new respect for the job and those who do it day-in and day-out.

Just the other day, I was chatting it up with a buddy of mine online, who’s a Los Angeles police officer. I don’t live in that area, but we met on a martial arts forum and had plenty to talk about. He seems like a great fellow. So, we were talking about his job and I couldn’t help but ask about self-defense. Since he practices Wing Chun and Brazilian Ju Jitsu, I wanted to know if he was aloud to use it much on the job. He said he uses self-defense tactics all the time. He also mentioned that LA is not like New York, and you can get away with more aggressive reactions down there. Makes sense to me. If I were a Los Angeles police officer, I definitely wouldn’t want to take beatings from thugs all the time and have to react with only words and warnings. If someone is physically aggressive with you, you definitely have the right to defend yourself. After a few stories, it became clear to me that being a Los Angeles police officer is extremely dangerous, and definitely not for everyone.

Don’t be so quick to judge! We constantly bash and scowl at police officers, but you should keep in mind that they are the ones keeping criminal element off the streets. Not to mention, they are who you’ll call for help if and when you need it. I’ll bet once they save your butt, you’ll look at Los Angeles police officers and all cops in a totally different way.
