Getting sponsored does not have to be hard, but there are some things to consider. You have to have enough clout or pull to make a company believe that their money will be worth the investment, and they could pull out at any time.
Normally, the more successful have an easier time getting sponsored. Athletes often have this in the form of commercial endorsements. They get paid to say they like something, and they may wear that companies logo quite often and will use the product publicly. This type of sponsorship is normally only seen at a professional level. Even then, getting sponsored can be a bit tough. For the amateur athlete, looking for sponsors on a local level might be the best idea when this is your goal. Most of the time, this sponsorship will be for an entire team. The company may buy uniforms for the team in these cases.
Some of the most common types of sponsorships come in the racing industry. Racecar drivers that race in NASCAR always have sponsors, though some have to run a few good races to make getting sponsored a bit easier. The bigger drivers may have companies fighting over them. However, your local track is probably full of drivers that have sponsors as well. Most of the time, getting sponsored on this level is rather easy, but the amount of money given to the driver is nothing like you would get on a national level. Most offer gas, tires, and other parts in exchange for some free advertising on the car.
Some musical bands try very hard to find support as well. Getting sponsored as a musical act may depend on how much you play, and how many people come, on average, to see you perform. If you routinely play in bars, your best chance of getting sponsored would be through companies that sell alcoholic drinks. You can get some financial support, and quite often, free drinks and specials for your audience. Sponsorship is just another form of advertising, but in this case, it can help the little guy get a leg up in whatever it is that they do the best.
