Barbie Collector Dolls Can Be Priceless

By: Jamie Preston

Barbie Collector Dolls

I stumbled on the world of Barbie collector dolls by mistake. I was not the type of person who traded things, and I never thought of myself as much of a collector. I really wasn’t even aware that I had a collection of Barbie collector dolls that would have made many women in this country green with envy. Nonetheless, it was the truth. I had dozens and dozens of dolls in my room that I had been keeping ever since I was very little. Some of them were very commonplace, but other ones were pretty rare. I had Barbies that were styled after various 80s pop singers, for example, that were almost impossible to find. I even had a few bootleg Barbie dolls that were worth a fortune in their own right.

My first clear sign that I had something worth investigating was when I was thrift store shopping with a friend of mine. She had a Barbie collector dolls hobby she did not talk about very often, and I was largely unaware of it. Nonetheless, she took me aside and whispered something in my ears as we walked down the toy aisle.

"That is one of the most valuable Barbie collector dolls I’ve seen in years, right there on the shelf," she said to me, pointing at a doll that I myself possessed. Before anyone else could make it there, she rushed over and grabbed it. I was baffled and intrigued. I had to see what my Barbie collector dolls were worth.

Having a whole Barbie dolls collection professionally appraised can cost a pretty penny, but it doesn’t cost anything to have someone informally look at them. I went to the next Barbie collector doll gathering, bringing a long list of all of the dolls that I had. I solicited a few loose estimates from some of the experts there, and was astounded at the figures that I met with. Apparently my Barbie collector dolls were worth thousands of dollars. I had never known before, but the proof was there.

I still haven’t sold any of my Barbie collector dolls, and I don’t think I will anytime soon. I keep them around because I like them, not because they are valuable. Nonetheless, it is good to know that I have an asset that I can liquidate in emergency situations if I ever need some quick cash. After all, you never know when your luck will change and you will need some money fast!
