Loving Him While He Loves His Sports
Jamie Roberts
Have you ever been in love with sports loving guy? It can be tough if your interests run towards the arts. My guy loves all sports. He really likes baseball and basketball but any sport will get him engaged. At least if it involves a ball.
One thing I can say is he's active. My husband is not one to sit on the sofa and watch his sports - he plays them. While you can always get him to join in for a game of basketball or golf, it's softball that is his real passion. It's like the sports bottle he drinks from has been filled with water from the elusive fountain of youth. Immediately he's less stressed, wrinkles fade, he moves quicker and smiles. My goodness that game makes him happy.
Besides that, as long as he doesn't treat his body as if it's still 13 years old, playing sports is good for his health. Like most men these days, he spends a lot of time behind a desk in a stressful job. So, getting outside, running the bases, and getting a little exercise is probably the best thing he does for his health. I will admit that he has pushed his limits, suffered injuries, and come home terribly sore. But he loves the game so much, that he's willing to do what it takes to recover so he can live to play another day.
Another nice side benefit is that it has inspired our kids to get involved in sports. We were blessed with two girls, but that hasn't stopped my husband from getting them into the game. Neither of the girls have a passion for softball. But one loves basketball and soccer and the other plays volleyball. Yes, we have run into those intense coaches and parents, but the girls have learned teamwork, good sportsmanship, and athletic skills that will last a lifetime. It's certainly better than spending hours in front of the TV or computer.
For our family, the sports events can often become a real family affair. The girls gather and we even pop some popcorn and watch the game. We often split over which team we root for but we all are just good friends when we are done. Sports events are typically much better family viewing than many other shows I see now on prime time TV.
Would I fall in love with my sports fanatic all over again? You bet. He's generous and a role model for our daughters and with all that exercise, still easy on the eyes. Oh, and one more benefit is I never struggle trying to decide what to give him as a gift. There are so many sports themed gifts that end up just being the perfect gift. So much better than a pen for Father's day and Christmas!
