Poker Chip Giveaways
Thom Riemersma
Most poker players will fiddle with their chips during play. They will do all sorts of little tricks with their chips, while betting they will either throw them down or put them in little piles. An experienced poker player will pick up on how people play around with their chips and literally cash in on it. Here are some little points to observe.
Wait for Them to Stop
There is one or two in every game you play. The player is constantly shuffling their chips. They seem to have a pattern of betting shuffling and folding those chips! However observe closely when there is an unexpected stop in the activity, after a bet. When this happens it is very possible that they do not have a winning hand and are not expecting cash out.
When people have made hands they're relaxed. Chances are they'd shuffle on with a made hand. The fact that they've stopped shuffling their poker chips shows that they're nervous. They don't want you to call. In this situation, raise. I'm willing to bet they fold.
Splashing the Pot
Now this behavior is a little more subtle and not always so easy to detect. You have seen carefree players who always throw their chips into the pot, enjoying the rattle of the chips. However there are also those cautious players who always stack their chips neatly when they bet but suddenly throw down their chips into the pot with authority. Now what is going on?
Always keep in mind the fact that poker is not always what it appears. Therefore when you see this quiet player play wildly you can be pretty sure that they are bluffing you. Call their bluff and raise your bet. If you are wrong you will know what they are up to next time they turn wild.
These small tells are not what a person usually does. It is all about changes in player's habits. Observe your fellow players and see any sudden changes that will indicate that something is fishy. Raise your bets and get to the bottom of it.
Most players not only play with their poker chips during the game, they actually practice playing with them at home. This ends up becoming an unconscience behavior and when players aren't paying attention to what they're doing, they're likely to give away valuable information. So watch the poker chips at your next game and see if you can peel a few extra dollars off that guy who won't stop shuffling his dang chips!
