Do you love to go swimming in the summer? Maybe you live in an area where it is like summer during most of the year. In that case, you may already have a pool of your own and are saving costs of having to pay for a membership at the local pool.

If you have children, all of their friends will want to come over and swim all summer. Think of the fun they will have. But, are you prepared in case one of the kids gets hurt, or worse yet, drowns?

The problem with pools? Many people don't think about the consequences if someone visiting and sharing the pool might get hurt, or worse yet, drown. You may think that if you have liability homeowners insurance, that it will cover this, but you are wrong. You must have a much bigger amount of liability if you want coverage in case something happens.

As always, insurance is just that. It isn't going to prevent someone from getting hurt, it will only help cover the costs. The main goal is the make sure you do what is needed to prevent the injuries in the first place.

1. Having a fence built around your pool will help ensure that you always know who is in it. You should always have a good handle on who is using your pool.

2. Do not let children use the pool without your supervision. Children are not experienced enough even when you think they are. They need someone their to help if something goes wrong.

3. Even if you are an avid partier, it is not cool to let anyone who has been drinking alcohol to swim in your pool. This includes yourself. Just as you are not to drive drunk, you shouldn't swim while drinking either. Your judgment becomes so much different when on alcohol.

4. Don't swim if you have been sick or are on some kind of medication that impairs your ability to stay awake or drive.

Yes, having a swimming pool of your own will add hours of fun and enjoyment for the entire family, but don't forget about the important steps that need to be taken. Talk to your insurance company and the the right policy and coverage for that pool. Happy swimming.
