Teen Substance Abuse Information For Parents

Chris Channing

Staying clean of drugs and alcohol is something that many adults face- but more frightening is the fact that younger and younger generations are starting to explore the offensive nature of substance abuse. Understanding why teens do this and how to prevent it is vital to parents, who should care for the well being of their children and help them the best they can.

The Science Behind Teen Abuse Of Alcohol And Drugs

The problem with many types of substance abuse cases in teens is the fact that teens are well educated on what counts as a substance. In this case, many gateway drugs may be tried that can lead to more fatal drugs that can do damage to a teen's body. Steroid use, for instance, may be used by sports players to help bulk up before sports season hits. Nicotine and some kinds of inhalants have also been accredited as being gateway drugs that lead to more powerful addictions.

Out of all the reasons that teens would try substance abuse with knowing full well that their actions are bad, peer pressure remains to be the biggest culprit. Peer pressure can essentially make a teen doing something he or she would normally not do. In this case, parents should always seek to educate teens on the dangers of peer pressure, and the fact that those who practice it are not good friends in the first place.

Substance abuse has long been reported in studies as coming from the drug known as marijuana. Marijuana has become common since the 1970's, where the use of the drug ran rampant. Now that teens of that generation are older, more and more adults will practice the usage of this drug. Even when they try to conceal this fact, studies show that adults who still use marijuana will be much more likely to raise kids who will also practice the drug. If this is the case, parents should maintain a healthy life themselves before trying to raise children.

As college and schools put more emphasis on doing well and overloading students with homework, students will often resort to caffeine, "uppers," inhalants, or other stimulants in order to get more studying time in. Increased work at school has also led to the abuse of alcohol, as students try to find a way to release their frustrations on the weekend. In this case, it's best to educate teens on stress management and the dangers of abusing substances in order to achieve relief.

Closing Comments

Drug and alcohol abuse is no laughing matter- teens are finding out that their actions will indeed impair their futures as time wears on. But to help protect them from themselves, parents can educate them on stress management, dangers of substance abuse, and parents should also try to exhibit good behavior themselves so as to exhibit a good behavior to follow. Doing so will enable teens to have the best chance possible in succeeding in life being substance-free.
