In order to stop puppy biting, always use the word 'No' as the command word for correction of any sort. Say 'no' when your puppy chews on things that he oughtn't. A firm 'no' should deter him from biting. And 'no' should also keep him from jumping up on people.

Your puppy must learn the word no as early as possible. This is the best word to use for correction, and if you teach them at an early age, they will always listen to it. Again, if you see your puppy chewing on something they are not allowed to chew, a firm "no!" is called for. If the word alone fails to stop their behavior, then tap them under the chin while repeating "no!".

If the tap under his chin does not deter him, then you need to employ a few stronger methods of correction. Tarry a while and watch animals interacting amongst themselves. You will find that they do not really tell each other what to do. They resort to body bumping, display fighting or growling. They encourage each other by barking and facial expressions. If even these measures fail, then they go for the jugular by outright conflict.

It is the behavior of the pack which teaches animals the behavior expected of them. They follow along with the pack; and the pack leader will enforce the rules! You must of course take on the role of pack leader when it comes to your puppy.

Stay calm, cool & composed Keep your cool when you must correct your puppy's behavior. You don't want to scare your puppy, just teach him or her "don't do what you are doing". Frightening your puppy by way of trying to correct their behavior is counterproductive. Correction is about changing behavior to conform with the "pack" e.g. -your family, human society at large, not traumatizing your pet.

Correct immediately A puppy does not have a very long memory. You must correct them immediately; if you wait, the puppy will not connect the behavior with the correction, which will leave you with a confused puppy. Puppies are programmed by their instincts to bite; but they must be taught that humans are not to be bitten. You must stop puppy biting, even when they give you play bites. At a young age, they must learn that biting humans simply is not acceptable.

Use the same sort of corrective discipline in order to stop puppy biting or when he jumps up at people. Jumping up in jest might appear to be cute in a little puppy. But just think of the consequences if an adult German shepherd or Saint Bernard were to jump up on you. It could jeopardize your very safety! So when your puppy jumps up at you, say 'No' and push him gently to the floor. When he does listen go you, praise him generously in order to reinforce his behavior.

Knowing all the correct ways to train your puppy will make the entire process of training much easier on you and on your new family member.
