Medical professionals today have been afforded the luxury of having available to them many different tools to assist in making breast cancer diagnosis more reliable, especially in its early stages. This is excellent news because it reduces the level of severity when detected early on.

Diagnosis begins with a clinical exam. The physician performs an exam using his hands which is similar to the recommended self-exam for all women over 19. Cancerous lumps typically feel hard and don't move around like benign cysts. Cancer tumors usually have an irregular shape, while non cancerous lumps are round. Professionals are trained to distinguish the difference.

A mammogram will help confirm the diagnosis. Modern digital mammograms are often computer assisted. Detection of tumors is aided by complex algorithms that do a good job of differentiating suspect image sections. This new tool greatly enhances the ability to eliminate false positives and to detect smaller, less obvious problems in the early stage of development.

Ultrasound is another modern tool that has been improved since its introduction. They're excellent at helping to distinguish between a benign cyst and a cancer tumor. Since cysts are harmless, fluid-filled sacs they react to sound waves differently than do the harder, denser cancer cells.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, also known as MRI is another useful diagnostic tool and is beginning to be used more often. Years ago, insurance companies wouldn't pay for this extremely expensive test. But since the costs have lowered and the coverage has expanded it is becoming more common. When a powerful magnetic field is swept across the breast it excites molecules in a way that is harmless but produces extremely one of kind results. These results allow professionals to utilize the images that are generated from the MRI to detect very small anomalies.

When other tests make professionals feel that a closer look is needed a biopsy is performed on the cells in question. Some may be as simple as a fine-needle aspiration where a small amount of fluid is removed with a needle from the breast lump in question. That fluid is then examined for cells that are indicative of cancer.

A deeper, or core biopsy is sometimes in order for certain cases. This too uses a needle but one that is thicker and removes tissue. More tissue is removed in a surgical biopsy. The sample is examined by an oncologist who is looking for cancerous cells.

A new test called a QM-MSP (quantitative multiplex methylation-specific PCR) was developed at John Hopkins University. This test guarantees more accurate and earlier diagnosis. This method relies on fluid that is drawn from the breast. The fluid is chemically tested and analyzed. When there is an occurrence of abnormally high levels of certain molecules this indicates the presence of cancer cells. Some studies have shown that clusters with as little as 50 cancer cells are able to be detected in this manner. It was able to detect cancer in 84 out of every 100 breast tumor samples used.

With so many modern technologies and techniques for testing, diagnosis can be done quickly and with much greater confidence than in the past. This is necessary for treatment of breast cancer in the timeliest way possible. It greatly improves the odds of it becoming a more serious matter than necessary.
