A poker players strategy has to incorporate many different aspects of his or her game. A way to look at each players strategy is to look at it in terms of a plan, policy, approach, or a tactic. The reason for coming with and using a strategy is to make sure that you are making as much money as you possibly can be and losing as little as you possibly can be. There isn't one strategy that will work for everyone. Each player is different and these differences require a different approach to the game.
Being able to fold a weak hand even though there may have been a large investment into the current pot is one of the most important strategies a new player can learn. Employing this strategy will make you be able to keep a far better reign on your bank roll, and teach you to only play premium hands which really is the bane of most new poker players.
Also knowing when you try to bluff your opponents is a strategy that at some point in your poker career will become almost as important as knowing when to fold. If you are always just folding when your hand is weak. Your opponent will see that and will just bet large at you every time and make you fold. Every once in awhile even though you may know your hand is the weakest you may want to make a large bet as if you have the best hand. Even if you get called and lose your opponent will still be on his toes the next time you bet large not knowing what cards you are holding.
If you envision becoming a world class poker player you must genuinely dedicate yourself to poker. Your quest of poker knowledge should be never ending. There a are a multitude of great poker books out there, buy and read as many as you can. Try using different strategies from different players. And must of all find one that suits your play style. Just stick to the winning strategies that you have developed and one day you may sitting across the table from one of the greats.
Becoming a great poker player will not happen over night, nor will becoming a winning poker player. But if you stick to a winning strategy and really dedicate yourself as a student of the game both of these are attainable. Read as much as you can, ask as many questions as you can, and most of all play as much as you can within the limits of your bank roll.
