As with many things in life there are just a small number of basic elements that if mastered lead to a profitable and thriving home business. The basics we will discuss here are - Product or service, marketing, delivery methods, accounting, coordination and planning and the business of business.
Accounting - the role of the bean counter. The financial size of a home business these days can vary from virtually zero to multimillion dollars. The accounting element ensures that any start up capital plus ongoing income is not overrun by ambitious expenses. For any home business cash is like oxygen and the accounting role makes sure your home business continues to breathe.
Marketing - if they do not know about your marvellous product or service they will not come and get it. Seems clear when you put it like that but marketing tends to end up at either one end of the scale or the other. What I mean by that is that there are those who think marketing is everything and neglect the other elements of a successful home business. There are also those who think that if their product or service is good enough the marketing will take care of itself. Both are mistakes. Marketing is necessary, but it needs the backup provided by all the other essentials.
Product or Service - does it satisfy a need or want? The basis of long term success in home business is delivering value to customers. You can fake it for a while with fancy advertising but in the end it all comes down to value for which a customer is willing to pay. So excellent value at a competitive price are the watchwords of any successful home business.
Delivery Methods. Not just the product delivery but the whole process of making your home business satisfy your customers needs and wants. Does your home business have a seamless ordering process? Does your customer know what to expect and are they pleasantly surprised when your home business delivers more than those expectations?
Taking care of business or the business of business. There are a myriad of administrative, legal and other requirements that need to be taken care of. Your home business may need licences, have health and safety considerations, and then there are the environmental factors - is your home business environment conducive to efficient production. These things and many others are in the category of those that will not make your home business flourish but if they are not done properly can cause it to flounder.
Coordination and Planning. Imagine a jigsaw puzzle where each of the pieces were made separately and you had the job of trying to put them together afterwards. Some home businesses are constantly trying to adjust a bit here and there to fit circumstances as they arise. Some of this will still be necessary as things change. However you will be in a much better position to respond to changes if your home business operates as a coordinated whole most of the time.
The successful home business consists of a tight mix of accounting, marketing, product or service, delivery methods, the business of business and coordination and planning. With all these elements present in the right proportions your home business will thrive.
All the elements are necessary. It is true that a home business may operate for a while without one or two - but in the end proper attention to all of these elements is what it takes to achieve massive success in your home business.
