Growing your own herbs is on the increase in home gardening and some of the reasons for this are the obvious joy that can be had from a successful herb garden and the tasty results in your cooking. All this only encourages you as a home gardener to grow more and more herbs and keep collecting favorable comments on your recipes.

The immediate benefit of growing a herb garden is the money savings. Buying fresh herbs from a store is an ongoing expense, whereas planting your own herbs will allow you to harvest lots more herbs for your money and give you plenty of for your cooking.

For just a dollar or so, you can buy a big packet of seeds that can grow many plants, and can keep producing for quite a while. Even when you factor in costs such as tools, fertilizer, and other garden expenses, you should still save a great deal of money if you use fresh herbs often.

Herb gardening is also very relaxing. Many people find that it really helps them reduce stress and unwind. All types of gardening can relieve stress, but herb gardening combines the stress-relieving effects of gardening with the natural stress-relief of aromatherapy!

Of course there's the advantage that herbs can be grown in containers or in very small areas if your space is limited. Containers are a good choice if you need to move them around to assist their growth. Speaking of growth, herbs don't require much maintenance and tend to be very hardy as well as prolific.

If you're looking for some attractive ornamental plants for accent planting around your garden, then most herbs can be used for this decorative purpose. Most herbs are extremely attractive and add another dimension to your garden design.

Your fresh herbs will come to the rescue of your family dinners, you'll not hear the word "boring" from your kids again. Your meals will become the focal point of favorable comments and be looked forward to with relish.

Then there's the extra nutritional value of fresh herbs. You now know how wonderful they make your meals taste, but did you know that many herbs contain minerals, vitamins and antioxidants vital to your health? So they don't just taste good and look good, they're also good for you!

If you should put your house up for sale in the future, your well cared for garden along with its mouth watering herb section will add value to your home. It can become a focal point to help in the successful sale of your property.

You'll most likely only find the simple herbs in your local grocery store, such as mint, chives or basil. If you're looking to use some of the more unusual herbs then you have no choice but to grow them yourself. So by having your own fresh herb garden you can grow and taste some of the exotic herbs that you've heard about, like garlic chives, purple basil and fresh chervil.

There's also the buzz you get when your friends and neighbors find out you're growing fresh herbs and start asking if they can have some. A freshly potted herb makes a delightful gift that keeps on giving!
