First you have to ask yourself (before you wonder how to get the second date): do I want the second date? If the person seems normal and likeable and you feel you have an emotional connection, the answer is probably "yes." The thing is, if you seemed the same way, the answer would probably also be "yes" if you asked for that second date.
Meeting someone in person that you met online is a little different though. Once you get to know someone online and decide to meet in person then that is actually your second date. Getting to that first in person meeting is the same as getting the second date.
The number one trick to getting to second date is just being yourself. Being calm allows your date to get to know the real you. If you are nervous and stammering that's not the real you and could spoil your chance for a second date. Be self confident is an extremely attractive quality to other people and makes other people want to be around you. Your date should be able to know you as your close friends know you.
With more experience you will gain more confidence. It's a catch 22 like having to have money to make money. You have to have to be confident before you can truly have confidence. If you really don't have confidence then you have to fake it until you do. Don't ruin the date with self destructive comments, project confidence without being overconfident.
Now, that's just how to act normal. To become likeable you have to be able to admit your short comings and not become defensive if they are brought up. On the other hand you don't want to put them in the spot light either. If they do come up at some point show your sense of humor by making a small joke about it and move on. If your date tends to focus on them throughout the duration of your date then you probably don't want to ask them on a second anyway.
An emotional connection takes work to get, but is easy to identify. If you find yourself making eye contact easily, laughing at the same things (and not polite laughter from the other person, while you roar at your own jokes), and saying the same things at the same time, you have an emotional connection.
Ending the evening at the high point is crucial in getting the second date. This leaves your date wanting to spend more time with you. That right there is the true key to getting the second date.
Set a time limit for you date before it even begins. If it goes well take it to the max time limit or, if it's going extremely well, take it as long as you want.
