Understanding Mountain Bike Maintenance
Alison Addy
Looking after your mountain bike is essential if you want to keep it in top condition. By looking after your bike, it will look after you.
Mountain biking can be a really demanding sport. However, as demanding as it is on the body, it is also extremely demanding on your bike too. Not many bikers stop to think about how the rough terrain and the constant jumps and tricks involved with downhill mountain biking can actually affect their bikes. If you do not maintain and look after your bike then it will at some point, give up on you.
What Mountain Bike Maintenance Involves
Even if you do not plan on doing any fancy tricks on your bike, the weather can still play a big part in causing potential damage. Extreme conditions such as strong winds, heavy rain and severe heat can cause the bike to become rusty and the heat can damage the tires. If your bike does start to rust then it will affect the performance of the bike and it can be extremely difficult to treat too. So in order to stop the weather from damaging the bike you will need to keep it in a cool, dry place.
Another thing you should do is tuning the bike. This should be done every week and it involves basically just checking over everything. Look at the wheels, the nuts and bolts and basically all of the smaller parts of the bike. It is possible for them to become loose and so if they do come loose they will need tightening up to prevent an accident.
The seat of the bike is what keeps you the most comfortable and so you should also make sure that it receives proper maintenance too. Ideally you should have a protected seat, especially when it is raining outside. This will ensure that the rain does not get to the seat as it will soak it through, you will not be able to sit on it for a while and it can potentially ruin it too.
Overall mountain bike maintenance can really help you to keep your bike in tip-top condition and prevent you from having to replace it anytime soon. The handlebars are one of the most important parts of a bicycle. Carbon bicycle handlebarsare the most strongest and lost lasting. Just looking at it every week should be enough as that way you can spot any potential problems as they arise. Obviously the more that you use your bike the more regularly you should check it over. By keeping your bike well maintained it will last you for many years to come. As they can be quite expensive to purchase in the first place, the longer you can maintain the condition of the bike, the better.
