The bipolar disorder is a mental ailment where a sufferer experiences random but frequent extreme mood swings - from extreme happiness to intense sadness and depression. Such mood swings happen on a regular basis and often, without warning.

The worst end result of an untreated bipolar person is suicide. Since many of the successful suicide cases occur in the early stage of bipolar disorder, it needs to be treated as early as possible. There are numerous ways to treat this disorder. There is the regular way that involves many possible medication and there are also more psychological ways.

The most used medication is lithium. This stabilizes the mood of a patient quite well. There are, however, people that dislike this method because of all the side-effects. Gaining some pounds, constant thirst and trembling hands are some of the many side-effects that come from using lithium.

Lithium is the most common medical treatment for bipolar patients. It works by stabilizing the mood of the patient, effectively countering the disorder. However, not all patients like taking lithium in spite of its effectivity. This is mainly because of the many side-effects it brings. Some of the many side-effects are the increase in weight, constant thirst, and trembling hands.

Another possible option is psychotherapy. Since the problem with bipolar disorder is mental, a good psychologist may be able to help. In many cases, along with the medication, mental stimulation with the help of a professional can prove effective as well.

Sometimes, in less severe cases, a change in lifestyle can actually be very beneficial to a bipolar person. A lot of the anxiety that lead to bipolar disorder comes from stress. The simple awareness of stressful activities and avoiding them can possibly be all a person needs to get better.

In most cases, doctors recommend to their patients a change of lifestyle. Stress is the number one trigger for the sudden and extreme mood swings, so a change in lifestyle can greatly help reduce the amount of stress that the patient is exposed to.
