When you do a search on the internet what do you do when you first start? Do you instinctively know what web address to go to? Is there some magical power that takes you there? Is there some force that takes you there?

Not likely! What you and all the other myriad people who are looking for something on the internet run straight to your favored search engine for guidance. As if my magic with a sentence, a phrase, or a few choice words typed into your computer you have laid before you a variety of websites that will fill your needs.

The words that people type into the search engines are what we are talking about when we talk about keywords. They are the way you guide those people searching for what you have to offer to your particular website. They are what you need to use in your AdWords campaign. You want to aim at potential clients while not leaving out those people who may no know that your precise service or product is in existence.

Without the proper keywords your AdWords campaign is doomed to failure from the very beginning. An AdWords campaign is a pay per click marketing venture; Google will charge you a fee for every occasion upon which your advertisement is selected, whether it leads to a sale or not.

Improper keywords mean that the target audience you are seeking will not be directed to your ad and you will not be able to capitalize on the exposure; however, an audience of people with little to no interest in what you have to offer but who searched for that keyword will continue to drive your advertising expenses higher and higher until you have no choice but to throw in the towel and close down your AdWords campaign.

There are a number of methods which can be employed to properly select keywords for an AdWords campaign. The simplest is for the advertiser to take a moment and consider both the product and the consumer market. What is it that the consumer wants from this product? What role is it going to fill? It is important that the need that a product fills be included in the advertisement; after all, if there is no need for a product it wouldn't be launched onto the market.

Once the advertiser has accurately identified a number of keywords which will help to direct traffic to their AdWords advertisement they can visit Google's AdWords site at www.adwords.google.com for assistance in finding synonyms and other related terms to allow them to make their ads as specific as possible and to sit back and enjoy the profits as they come rolling in.
