The DANGERS of Acid Reflux Surgery

Proposed by doctors as a final solution for severe GERD, surgery for acid reflux is a process of medical action supposed to relieve acid reflux symptoms. It is suggested mostly for those GERD patients for whom medicaments or changes in lifestyle no longer have any impact on their disease. In most cases, acid reflux surgery is seldom done.
The focus is on the local causes of acid reflux that happens when the LES or lower esophageal sphincter (the one-way valve at the lower end of the esophagus) fails to shut and so stomach content is transmitted back into the esophagus. When the acid hits the esophagus lining, heartburn results as the burning sensation occurring in the chest and/or the throat. Conventionalists are strong supporters of the surgical approach because heartburn is considered to be a local problem to be resolved by treating the immediate causes.
Nissen fundoplication is the surgery that is standard for acid reflux. The whole operation is often accomplished with a laparoscopic (where small incisions allow surgery that is minimally invasive) technique for the surgery, but can be done as well as traditional open surgery.
The aim of the operation is that the refluxed content from the stomach no longer comes in contact with the esophagus. For this, the surgeon folds the gastric fundus (parts of the stomach) around the lower esophagus thus reinforcing the natural valve that links the esophagus and the stomach.
An obvious disadvantage of surgery for acid reflux resolution (that goes no further than local and immediate causes) is that it bypasses and does not properly deal with several primordial internal factors and co-factors which create the context that provokes acid reflux. Sadly, fundoplication has several possible complications, such as problems in swallowing, cramps in the abdomen, nausea, gas bloat syndrome, and others.
During a period of one year up till late 2005, a treatment was available as an alternative to acid reflux surgery. A spongy material called Enteryx was injected during endoscopy into the lower wall of the esophagus. In 2005the FDA recalled Enteryx however after a death and several injuries. The Enteryx marketer Boston Scientific Corp. was criticized by the Food and Drug Administration for "ongoing systemic violations" of standards of quality control and said that no new products from the company would find approval before the problems were corrected.
By luck, an alternative to acid reflux surgery exists that is much safer than this case, which really goes to show how risky surgical procedures can be for treating gastro esophageal reflux disease.
