Kindle, the Wireless E-Book Reader From Amazon
Michael jones
Unique design , some say a bit clunky, but there is nothing wrong with it's functionality. From a distance it looks really interesting but the design is strange to say the least. Up close it's white finish makes it look cheap & nasty and it lacks the the sleek finishes that the Apple products boast. This oversight detracts from the wireless reader's great performance.
Placement of the page forward and page back buttons is not well thought out as they are sensitive and are activated as the unit is handled. Put it in the dysfunctional cover and you will move the page setting one way or the other. This can be very frustrating.
No doubt third party suppliers will be offering replacements for the Kindles terrible cover.Remember the old pocket calculator covers with the plastic corners. Well, the Kindle's cover is the same. No only that but to activate the unit it must be removed from this cover as the on/off button is recessed in the cover.
The removable battery is a great benefit although it is hidden behind a clip-off cover. Most electronic devices which utilize memory cards have access to these on the edge of the unit but the Kindle memory slot is in the battery compartment. A bit like a sim card in a cell phone. This is not conducive to ease of use. Perhaps because the unit is touted to work for a week without charge and store in excess of 200 books that the designers felt that the user would not need to get to these components often. Strange.
As an Amazon Kindle owner you should never be short of choice for e-books. Instant wireless connection to the Kindle Store ensures a selection of 110 000 books on demand and bestsellers for less than $10.Save the forests buy an Amazon Kindle!
Added features of the Kindle are blog and RSS feeds, internet access, e-mail and publications can be subscribed to. In fact the Kindle store offers a wide variety of local and international journals. The wireless connectivity means that you have your favorite subscriptions available when you are traveling. For those who need access to large reference manuals such as students , doctors , attorneys etc the Amazon Kindle does that for you and is capable of storing scanned images as well so input is a breeze via the USB port.
The Amazon Kindle has free built-in access to Wikipedia.org and with it's qwerty keyboard makes searching, annotating, editing etc a breeze. The button are rectangular and a reasonable size which makes life easier. The Kindle also has a built-in dictionary.
For those with eyesight challenges the Kindle is a pleasure with it's ability to enlarge text for comfortable viewing. Too long we have been struggling with small type on other electronic devices such as PDA's and cell phones.
The Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white screen that resembles the appearance and readability of printed paper. The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays the ink particles electronically. It reflects light like ordinary paper and uses no back lighting, eliminating the glare associated with other electronic displays. As a result, Kindle can be read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room. The screen never gets hot so you can comfortably read as long as you like.
For those that prefer to hear the story rather than read it , audio books can be substituted from the internet and ported via the USB connection. E-book compatibility is not an issue as most normal ad popular formats are catered for from Microsoft Word, text, html and most graphic images as well. The Kindle can browse the web as well although that function is not a strong point. Should you wish to e-mail an image or doc to yourself this is arranged via your free mail account for a small fee.
No more searching for hot spots, Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (EVDO) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, download, and read content on the go.Please check out the wireless coverage areas as it tends to be sparse in the western USA and particularly so in Montana and Alaska. Amazon's page has details on coverage.
The Amazon Kindle is truly an innovation which is going to change the way we live and boost the flagging electronic book market. Books cannot be shared at this stage which resolves much of the electronic piracy issues that are always a concern on the internet.
