The primary requirement for making wine at home is getting the required equipment, most of which is likely to be already present in your kitchen. Essential equipment for making wine includes: wine bottles, a juice-extracting device, water seal, preservative (usually sulfur dioxide), fermenting material (yeast or yeast nutrients), a fermentation container, and a siphon.

The Winemaking Process

The basic process of how to make wine at home is quite easy and inexpensive. You may start with gathering the appropriate amounts of necessary ingredients: wheat, food coloring, eggs, sugar, wine grapes, and yeast. Separate the grapes and wash them. Crush them in your hands and put them in an earthen jar with a lid. Whip the whites of a couple of eggs. Add sugar and the rest of the ingredients to the crushed grapes and cover the jar tightly. Remove the lid once daily to stir the contents and close again. This procedure is to be repeated for three weeks. Then stop stirring and keep the container closed for another three weeks. Open the jar and carefully strain the clear wine that is gathered at the top, using a clean nylon cloth. Add color and a preservative drop by drop to the wine until it attains the desirable color. Proper Timing and Sanitization

A good guide on how to make wine at home will stress the importance of proper timing so as to prevent rushing the process that spoils the quality of the product. No steps are to be cut short and one must filter the wine patiently, even if it appears clear to the eye. It is also important to allow the wine to age properly. Proper sanitization of the equipment is equally important since bacteria can spoil the ingredients at any stage in the process. Not only is it important to use clean raw materials and utensils but also to work in a clean place.
