Wooden Decks
When I was a teenage kid, I used to work for a company in the summer that installed outdoor wooden swimming pool decks. At the time, I wasn’t particularly passionate about the work I was doing. It earned me money and that was it. Building wooden decks was like anything else. I liked working with my hands and moving around, and I certainly liked having pocket money. Nonetheless, it was just a job.
When I bought a house of my own years later, however, my attitude towards wooden decks changed. Suddenly, it became something really important ? a sign of prosperity, and a way to enjoy your property more deeply than you could otherwise. You can tell the neighbors who really took pride in their houses because they had wood decks or outdoor porches. Building a new deck was a great way to make friends in the neighborhood as well. You can host barbecue parties, show off your own workmanship, and generally find dozens of different reasons to schmooze.
In spite of my experience building wooden decks, however, I contemplated having one installed for me. I had been out of wood working for so long, and I didn’t have the proper woodworking tools. Besides that, I had never built a wooden deck myself. I had simply hammered where I was told to, sawed when I was told to, and helped to put on the final coat of paint when it was all done. Overseeing every stage of building a wooden deck was way beyond my experience.
Nonetheless, I figured that I was probably up to it. I looked at do-it-yourself manuals, bought some plans, and set off to build my dream deck. Wooden decks take a lot of work, but they aren’t as hard as you would think. As long as you keep on working week after week, you can get it done. The key is to not do anything in a halfhearted fashion. Be sure to lay the concrete foundations in the correct manner. Be sure to saw all the boards to the right length. Be sure that all your joints are clean. After all, building wooden decks that last slowly is better than building ones that fall apart quickly.
In the long run, I’m glad that I took the time to build it myself. Although I wasn’t able to enjoy it that summer, I was able to enjoy it twice as much next year. I could really show off the wooden deck to the neighbors, and I had some great barbecue parties.
