You may think of sun lamps as things that people use in the home to get a tan. These might be used to keep some color in the cold, winter months, or they can be used instead of direct sunlight. Some believe them to be safer than actual sun, but that is a point that is highly debated. There are other uses, however, and they can do a person a world of good, even when getting a tan is the last thing on their mind. Those that suffer from depression can get a lot out of these lamps, and it doesn’t take much time for them to be helpful.

When it comes to using sun lamps for tanning purposes, one should use care. Because these lamps mimic the rays that tan the skin, they can still be damaging. They may not be any safer than the sun, but many find them to be more convenient and they find that they work much faster. Using these sun lamps can up the chances for skin cancer, so some form of skin protection or sun block is needed. Those that burn easily in the sun can still burn easily under sun lamps, so keep your skin type in mind.

Sun lamps can also do wonders for those with seasonal depression. Seasonal depression is something that happens in the winter months when the weather seems to be gloomy all of the time, and when people tend to spend much more time indoors. There are many days in cold climates when going outside is down right dangerous. When this happens, the sun needed to keep mood elevated is missing. Using sun lamps in the winter can help lift that depression.

Those who suffer from chronic depression, or who are bipolar, can also benefit from sun lamps. Some psychiatrists and therapist will recommend light therapy. This is the act of exposing a depressed person to sunlight or imitated sunlight for at least one hour a day, if not more. This can help with some of the symptoms of depression and make someone feel a lot better. When using sun lamps for this purpose, they should be used year round, unless regular sun is sought in the summer. Use the same skin protection policies with these lamps as you would if you were using them for tanning. A doctor can recommend the right bulbs and even specific lamps that would be best for this therapy.
