Hollywood has done a lot for the security business, but it has not done a lot for consumers. People are always watching high-tech, high-stakes robberies on movies. They get the wrong idea about security devices. In these heists, ace criminals get together to steal millions of dollars from some of the most high-tech vaults in the world. The only things that can even approach managing to stop them are security systems that involve voice print identification, retinal scanning, infrared motion detectors, automatic lockdowns, and all kinds of other high-tech gadgets. In reality, however, these types of heists represent an infinitesimal proportion of security breaches. For your average consumer, a security bar over the door and the windows is enough to scare away most would-be bad guys.
The thing you have to realize about crooks as they are not there because they enjoy being evil. They are there because they want to make money. The evil is incidental for them. They won't try to break into your house or business if you make the job too difficult. As a matter of fact, they won't try to break into your house if it even looks like it will be a difficult job. A single security bar, mounted in a solid wall, will do more to scare away criminals than all of the hidden cameras money can buy. A security door and shuttered windows will scare off 95% of all perpetrators. It doesn't have to be complicated, and it doesn't have to be expensive. Unless you're dealing with some extremely persistent criminals, you can get all the security you need for an affordable price.
Of course, it all depends on what business you're in. For example, if you run a liquor store, the more security the better. A security bar over the door won't help when robbers pose as customers. If that happens, you need security cages. You need to be able to secure your employees behind lexan, or at least wire mesh. That way, unless your criminals are very smart or carrying extremely high-powered weapons, your employees will be safe until the cops come. If you are just trying to prevent break-ins, however, security bars are likely to be enough. Even if you live in a very bad neighborhood, you are unlikely to come across someone who will steal from your house if there is a security bar and a well-built door to stop them.
