When I was a young girl, my grandmother told me that they were getting some new cabinets, and the best part was that one of them would include a lazy susan. I had no idea what that meant, and I wondered why Susan was being so lazy in the kitchen and why someone may have been picking on her about it. Once I saw what she was talking about, I thought this was a great idea, and wondered why no one had thought of this sooner.
The lazy susan may have been around for a while, but this was the first I saw of it. The new cupboard that had the lazy susan was the one in the corner near her stove. Inside, she kept many of her spices and other cooking essentials that she needed to have close at hand. Unlike me and my mother, she made everything from scratch, and seemed to enjoy her time in the kitchen. This new turnstile in the cupboard made things easier for her to store and to find while she was cooking.
If you want a lazy susan, you don’t have to have one like hers. You can find smaller ones that you can keep right there on your countertop if you wish, or that you can fit in almost any cupboard in your kitchen. The lazy susan that my grandmother had was built right in, and you can always find them as well if you are remodeling your kitchen. They aren’t just for use in the kitchen either. You could have them in your pantry, or you can use them in almost any other place in the house where you need things to be within easy reach. They work well for craft items, and even in rooms like the bathroom.
I always thought the lazy susan was much like a merry go round for the kitchen. I would sit on the floor and turn it slowly to see what my grandmother had in there. I actually learned a lot about cooking this way, as I would always ask about something I didn’t recognize, and my grandmother would tell me in detail about what something was and what it was used for. I don’t currently have a lazy susan in my kitchen, but I think I might need one soon. It might just encourage me to do more cooking for my family, and that can not be a bad thing.
