Interior Design Courses Can Teach You A Lot

By: Cameron Stewart

When I first started taking interior design courses, I had no idea that I was going to make a career out of it. One of my friend had given me some interior design software to use to help plan the decor of my house. It looked like great software, and I had a lot of fun playing with it, but when it came down to making something useful, I just could not do it. I had always handled interior decorating one piece at a time. I would collect this piece of antique pottery, that office chair, and the sofa from somewhere else, and soon a room would start to take shape. I was pretty happy with the way it usually worked out, but lately I had to wanted to upgrade my interior decorating.

Once I used that software, however, I realized that I didn’t really know how to make my house come together. That is why I decided to take an interior design course. I have always loved taking college classes as a way to keep my mind active, and learn new skills besides. Interior design courses seemed like a perfect way to get some experience in something that interested me. I signed up that very day, seeing that they offered courses in interior design at the local community college. I did not know what to expect, but I figured that if I didn’t like it I could always quit. The class was cheap enough that, even if it turned out to be a flop, it wouldn’t matter that much.

As it turned out, however, I really enjoyed my interior design course. I had expected most of the people who take interior design courses to be folks working towards a degree, but I was surprised at the variety of different students. There were people from all walks of life, and many of them were there for the exact same reason that I was. Interior design courses are a great way to freshen up your decorating skills. However, once I had been taking that class for a while, I realized that I wanted to go further with it. There is a lot more to interior decorating than most people realize, and it can take several interior design courses to really master all of the basics of decorating. By the time I had taken a couple classes, I realized that I might as well continue. After all, it is always nice to learn a new career skill.
