Everett Washington Is Neat

By: Jean Houston

The second largest marina on the USA’s West Coast is located at Everett Washington. The town’s economy is largely dependent on the Boeing assembly plant and the naval port. Visitors can stroll round the elegant historic district, home to several large mansions and there is plenty of green space in the town’s forty parks. It’s also a good base to see other sights in the area and is just 25 miles from the bustling city of Seattle.

The Boeing Factory offers tours round its huge assembly building and construction lines. Visitors can also explore the Future of Flight Aviation Center Air Museum, which has exhibits relating to the manufacture, propulsion and engines of Boeing aircraft. There are also information videos, a children’s play area and a flight simulator.

The world of nature is on show at the Everett Arboretum and Gardens, which has a variety of garden displays, including a dahlia garden and a conifer garden. There is also a Japanese Maple grove with maples, ferns and hydrangeas. Pieces of sculpture add to this peaceful oasis in Everett Washington and there is an urban tree walk and a woodlands garden with a grotto and an azalea display.

Shoppers have a convenient facility on hand at the recently expanded Everett Mall. The center is part indoors and part outdoors and has shops, restaurants and a 16 screen movie theatre. There are many well known stores, such as Macy’s, Sears and Borders bookshop. More traditional shopping is done at the popular Farmer’s Market, a social occasion in Everett Washington as well as a shopping opportunity. Stalls sell baked goods, essential oils, nuts, flowers and arts and crafts, such as jewelry, quilts, hand painted glassware and wood furniture. Live folk music adds to the atmosphere and there are a few hot food vendors to choose from.

The Jetty Island along the waterfront is an artificial island, two miles long with sand beaches and shallow water. A free ferry service operates from the 10th Street Boat Launch and Marine Park and special cruises are organized. Group parties can book too and enjoy a cruise round the Everett Washington Harbor and Port Gardner Bay. Some cruises have guides on board to give a commentary on the marine life and history of the area. There are also sunset cruises and trips to view the resident ospreys and their young in summer time. Swimming is only permitted on the West Shore.
