Essay Questions Take Time To Answer

By: Brett Franklin

Essay questions

I can’t name a single person who looks forward to taking a test for a class. If you do, then don’t bother to read anything that I’m about to say. Most students will say that they dread essay questions rather than multiple choice or true and false. Essay questions don’t just grade on your knowledge of the answer but evaluate your language and writing skills. You can answer an essay question correctly but use improper English and misspell lots of words, which will result in a much lower grade. Teachers like to see that thought has been put into answering essay questions.

However, essay questions can be tricky to grade accurately. Students have learned the art of talking in circles. A question asked could be turned around in so many different ways. You might try to disguise the fact that you don’t know the question and are just babbling but your teacher may see right through that. Maybe they’ll give you some points for your creative ramblings but it certainly won’t help you to pass the class. English, History and Literature classes are quite popular for having tests with essay questions. Sometimes you might be lucky and know ahead of time that there will be essay questions. Other times, the teacher stuck some questions on there and you weren’t prepared in the least. Classes like math and science may have traditional tests and don’t require essay questions.

Part of the reason that teachers tend to like essay questions is because it encourages problem solving and more in depth thinking. You can’t just memorize facts for the test and then forget them the moment you hand the test to the teacher. Essay questions are looking for some structure and thought that answers the question properly. Anyone can take a test and mark down some answers whether they are correct or not. But, if you have to answer essay questions, your teacher finds out if you actually understand and comprehend the material that you learned. Perhaps that’s why so many people fear essay questions.

Of course, there is always controversy when it comes to essay questions. Many will say that it is not ideal for testing purposes. Others say that essay questions are incredibly ideal. When you get to the college years, you’ll find that some tests are completely essay questions. If students never had essay questions, they’d find themselves incredibly unprepared once they enter college. All that needs to be done is putting more time and thought into a particular subject or question. Don’t make careless mistakes. Take your time.
