Area Codes Depend On Location

Using Area Codes To Trace Unknown Phone Calls

There are many times when you won’t want to answer a phone call. You may be avoiding a clingy friend, or you may not be in the mood to stay on the phone with your mom for three hours. Most of the time, the avoidance has to do with bad timing, and these are all calls that we will return when the time is right. However, there can be times when you don’t know who is calling, and the person on the other end of the phone does not leave a message. When these mysterious calls continue, you may want to find out more about the number. Something as simple as the area codes of numbers can help you more than you know.

Your first consideration when looking up an unknown phone number is to put this number into many of the various reverse phone lookup services that you can find online. These are really good at times, and can find some information on many landline and some cell calls. You simply input the number, area code first, into the box and hit enter. If there is any information about the number, this will pop up for you. You may find some free ones, but they don’t always work. You can pay a fee, but look for one that offers a refund if they cannot find what you need. Don’t submit numbers to any services without area codes, or you will come up blank.

If you strike out in this manner, you still have some options. In extreme cases when you are being harassed by someone or you feel your family might be in danger, you can always hire a private investigator to see what they can come up with for you. In most other cases though, that would be overkill. Instead, think about the area code that came with the phone number. If that area code is your own, you know that the call is pretty local. If not, you should find out more about that code and other area codes for surrounding areas.

Sometimes, an area code covers and entire state, but there are many states that have several. That can help you narrow down from where a call is being placed. You can go to the next three digits after the area codes, otherwise known as the prefix, and then see if you can find the town or city with which it is associated. This can give you even more information about who may be calling, and even what they want.
