Making The Most Of Academic Journals Online
The Internet is a great place to find information, but it is not always a great place to find good, accurate information. I would say that, out of every ten or so articles on the Internet, maybe 1 or 2 contains the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. The other 8 or 9 are there to present a specific opinion or have some type of inaccuracy. They may be poorly written, maliciously false, or just out of date.
That is why academic journals online are such a useful resource for researchers, students, and anyone else who uses the Internet. As a modern student enrolled at the University of Phoenix, I can tell you that I make heavy use of the Internet every day. If I am writing a paper, the quickest way to get background info is to check the web. If I am studying for a test, the same is true. But by using academic journals online, I do not have to compromise the quality of my work in order to get good results.
Of course, it helps to be a member of a big university. Many online academic journals are only available to students, faculty, and staff or big colleges. Others require a hefty subscription fee that your university may have already covered for its students. It's hard to say, since academic culture has not fully adjusted to being wired. No two academic journals online have the same approach.
The trend, however, is towards more and more free information. It will not be long before almost every academic journal online is free. Already, there are some colleges that go far beyond making their journals free. For example, MIT makes all of its classes free online. They have academic journals online, free course notes, lectures, and even textbooks. You can study more or less any subject there is in your spare time! This is great if you want to learn something, but do not have the money to pay for tuition. You can do all of the coursework at home in your free time, while enriching your brain and exploring something you have never been able to explore before. It can be hard in some ways, since there is no professor to lecture to meet with if you have troubles, but it is really worth all of the trouble. After all, when one of the best colleges in the world offers free online courses, how can you say no?
