Causes For Sweating After Eating

Sweating after eating is medically called gustatory sweating. This means that an individual will sweat profusely in the face, neck and hairline or any other part of his body after consuming food. Sweating after eating usually happens to people who have eaten spicy foods. This is mainly due to the heat that is generated by the body's reaction to the hot (spicy) food. This condition is called gustatory hyperhidrosis and is an involuntary response to spicy foods. It is the over stimulation of our nervous system. It is a natural response that will and can happen to everybody. Some cases of sweating after eating are different from this natural response. Just eating normal food can trigger sweating in the face, hairline and cheeks.

Frey's Syndrome

Frey syndrome can cause sweating after eating but only in one side of the person's head. This is a result to the main salivary gland located at the cheek being damaged. Sweating after eating is the end result of this syndrome. This condition is stimulated when a person salivates during and after eating. Even thinking of food will bring about Frey's Syndrome. In most cases, it is the cheek that sweats instead of the head or hairline. This is one sign that you may have Frey's syndrome instead of other causes of sweating in the face.

Diabetic Gustatory Sweating

Sweating after eating can also be because you have diabetes or are prone to the condition. The nerves of the face may be innervated and the result is excessive sweating after eating. The sweat should occur during and after eating and is commonly found in the neck area or the head or in both parts. There is actually some symptomatic relief for treating the condition.

Sweating after eating can be a source of embarrassment for many people, which is why many seek medical help to relieve this condition. Knowing what causes sweating after eating is the first step to treating it. There may be underlying conditions that are the roots causes of sweating after eating and not necessarily just a reaction to spicy foods or the heat of the environment.

It is best to seek the advice of a medical professional if you are bothered by yourself sweating after eating. Tests can be performed to see if you have some conditions or may just be a natural reaction to specific foods and weather conditions. If the occurrence disturbs you then consult a doctor.
