How Solar Power Works Is A Great Question

   By: Jean Houston

Finding Out How Solar Power Works

The idea behind solar energy is nothing new; in fact solar energy was looked at in the late 1800's as a source of energy. When looking at our world, it is very clear that solar power is both beneficial to our environment and obviously abundant, as opposed to fossil fuels that are a scarce resource and not eco friendly.

Solar energy is certainly a way for our world to use energy in a productive and clean manner for our environment, and many consumers are looking into how solar power works to discover if they can use it in their homes.

Learning How Solar Power Works

When discovering how solar power works it is important to realize that there have been tremendous strides in the collection of solar energy. When looking at how solar power works there are some basic steps that need to be understood in the process of collecting solar energy.

First, when looking at how solar power works, understand that the sun is made up of photons and that these photons carry different levels of energy depending upon their wavelengths. These photons are what are harnessed to provide solar energy.

When collecting solar energy, a photovoltaic cell is used. These cells were developed in the 1950's and have been improved upon throughout the years. This material has been specially treated to work with solar rays in order to collect solar energy. Most of the time these cells are made from a silicone material, which is used because it is a material that can act as a semi-conductor and the photons that strike the material either pass through it, are reflected by it or they are absorbed by the material.

Within the silicone material a process occurs that creates energy. This process occurs when the photons hit the conductor, which has been charged with either negative or positive energy. This charge then helps to knock free electrons that are then collected and this creates an energy charge much like an electrical charge that comes from batteries. This is a simple explanation for a complex process that creates energy.

By using solar power, consumers can have a source of power right at their own homes, without having to rely on the varying cost of fossil fuel. Solar power is a much cleaner and pure source of energy as opposed to fossil fuel, and many consumers are beginning to realize the benefits of learning how solar power works.
