The Long And Interesting History Of The BMW Motorcycle
What can you say about a motorcycle company who has a history that includes some of the earliest motorcycles ever made and a tie in to the world famous Red Baron of World War I? The BMW motorcycle has a very long and storied history that includes some of the most famous names and events in the world of transportation. While known primarily today as a luxury motorcycle, the BMW motorcycle is also a mainstay on the motorcycle racing circuits and has forged its reputations on the battle fields of Europe and on the streets of Germany. The BMW motorcycle is the culmination of decades of research and engineering and while many people consider the BMW motorcycle to have passed their heyday and their height of popularity, the BMW motorcycle is still considered the height of motorcycle luxury and has a reputation for durability and reliability that is both earned and deserved considering what the BMW motorcycle has been through in its history.
The BMW motorcycle is the result of the research and development of the German BMW automobile manufacturing company. The BMW company was formed when two airplane manufacturing companies merged to start building high end airplane engines for the German WWI effort. One of the engines they built wound up in a plane used by the famous WWI German flying ace The Red Baron. The BMW company started making cars and other vehicles but in the aftermath of WWI there was high inflation in Germany so many people looked to the BMW motorcycle as low cost but high quality transportation. In the face of these hard times the BMW motorcycle built its reputation for reliability and cost effective operation. It would be a reputation the BMW motorcycle would take into World War II.
World War II And Beyond
For the hard economic times in Germany prior to World War II the BMW motorcycle was probably the transportation means of choice. Many people consider the time from 1914 to 1939 to be the peak of their popularity. After World War II the BMW company decided to focus more on the performance of their motorcycles and soon their precision engineering and hand crafted products became considered high end and expensive. American companies started to produce less expensive motorcycles and soon the BMW company found itself in a niche market for motorcycles. They have thrived there ever since.
Whether it is in racing or in the area of luxury motorcycles, the BMW company has found a niche they are both very happy with and very successful in. Their name and reputation are regarded highly in the fields in which they are known to excel as the BMW has come to mean high quality and performance all over the world.
