Rental Car Insurance Can Be Expensive

By: Jordan Thompson

Don’t Disregard Rental Car Insurance Even Though You May Be Tempted

You’re in the process of renting a car when the clerk asks you if you’d like to purchase rental car insurance. It’s just a few dollars more per day and it will protect you from having to pay for any damages that are incurred during your trip. You’re trying to save as much money as possible so your first thought is probably to disregard the insurance. After all, you’re a safe driver and you don’t foresee anything happening to this nice car that you’re about to take possession of. But hang on. What if something does go wrong? What if another driver suddenly runs into you? What if the freeway overhead collapses? What if there’s a tornado or some other act of God? Are you sure you want to risk having something happen to the car which would cost you much more in the long run? You may want to rethink your initial plan of disregarding the rental car insurance and just go with it. It’s not that much more and you’ll feel better knowing you’re protected.

Don’t Just Check The Box

Before you sign up for the extra rental car insurance, ask what it covers. It may be easy to just check the box stating that you want the rental car insurance but what if it doesn’t cover certain things? For instance, some rental car insurance won’t protect you from acts of God such as hurricanes or floods. They’ll only protect you if you’re hit by another car or something to that effect. You want to be completely clear before you sign up for the rental car insurance so that you know exactly what you’re paying for.

How Much Will It Cost?

Usually, when you rent a car, the process is so quick that you’re at the desk for a few minutes and the next thing you know, you’re in the rental car ready to go. It’s not until you return the car that you’re bombarded with all these fees and extra charges you weren’t aware of. Don’t make the process of signing up for the rental car insurance a quick deal. Take your time and ask plenty of questions. How much is the rental car insurance going to cost you? Is it accrued each day or is it bundled in one simple package? You don’t want any surprises awaiting you when you drop the car off so make sure you are clear on everything the first time.

Renting a car can be a fun experience. After all, you get to try out a new car for a little while and you can run up miles on a car that you don’t even own. However, anything can happen and you don’t want to pay for any damages that can occur if you don’t have to. Therefore, sign up for the extra rental car insurance and have the peace of mind in knowing that you’re well covered in case the unthinkable actually does happen.
