The many career job opportunities drew in people from all over the world, of all ethnicities, looking to secure a career position. It is one of the oldest buildings still standing in the city, having been constructed in the early 1800's by freed slaves. This was the site of the first African American church gathering in the state of Michigan, making it a historical and highly celebrated landmark today. The architecture here is, to say the least, on a very grand scale. Today, the church still holds services.
