The colorless, odorless, and practically tasteless water is nature's wonder liquid with high solvent properties. It is the medium in which all energy reactions take place and has multiple functions in the human body. Inspite of this, it continues to remain obscure in the minds of many who do not recognize water as a vital nutrient for the human body.
Drinking adequate amount of water is required to keep us alive and has countless benefits which include - transporting nutrients, flushing out the wastes and toxins, regulating body temperature, maintaining electrolyte balance in the body, and maintaining optimum viscosity of blood. Drinking enough water keeps your skin hydrated and prevents skin diseases (such as eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, wrinkles & spots) most of which are caused due to a dry skin. In fact the list of drinking water is amazingly long.
Exercising increases the basal metabolic rate of the body and therefore, wastes and toxins are produced more rapidly. Drinking adequate amount of water at regular intervals helps to flush out these wastes and toxins from the body which if allowed to accumulate, can lead to aches, pains and make you feel stressed out.
Maintaining the correct water balance is a very crucial aspect of body building. When creatine is taken as an exercise supplement (most body builders because it assists in the growth of lean-muscle mass after a workout), then the muscles tissues become saturated with a lot of intracellular water because creatine tends to absorb too much of water. Therefore, body builders need to take ample water to keep their muscles adequately hydrated.
One of the most significant functions of water in your body is to maintain electrolyte balance within our bodies, which is possible only when our bodies are in a well hydrated state. Drinking enough water keeps your muscles adequately hydrated and prevents muscle spasms. It also aids in burning down fat and building more muscles by transporting nutrients to the muscle tissues present in your body.
Many people believe that drinking water hampers your workout. This is not true. In fact, water aids in the lubrication of the joints (water is a component of the synovial fluid, the lubricating fluid present in between two joints) and therefore makes movement easier and painless.
If you feel your feet and hands going cold or if you get a fainting sensation during your workout, then remember that this could be because your body is extremely dehydrated. Immediately get a water bottle for yourself and start sipping water very slowly at first, wait for sometime and gradually increase the water intake. Continue with your workout (after a brief gap) only if you feel all right.
Ideally, it is recommended that body builders must drink at least 1 to 2 glasses of water before, during and after a workout. They should cultivate the habit of taking water breaks every 15 minutes of the workout session. They should also continue to take one to two glasses of water within two hours after exercise, and even 3 to 4 hours after completion of the workout.
